Is Single Pair Ethernet a trend or a new standard?

Single Pair Ethernet (SPE) is a growing trend with the potential to become a new communications standard. Since SPE builds on established Ethernet standards, it integrates the knowledge and experience of manufacturers and users accumulated over decades. At the same time, SPE offers clear advantages: foremost, unified communication across all application layers; additionally, extended network reach and dramatically reduced material costs and volumes — things that are difficult to achieve with traditional Ethernet standards. Taking into account the possibility of power delivery over the data line (SPoE / PoDL), much slimmer and more powerful solutions become possible than before. SPE is specifically targeted at IIoT, building, and automotive applications with robust specifications for power supply and data transmission over greater distances. These markets are forward-looking and evolving. Thus, it is expected that SPE will establish itself as a new standard.
