Connecting Modbus interfaces in photovoltaic systems

  • Would you like to expand your PV system with additional Modbus sensors or actuators? Perhaps these are not located in the same room, but elsewhere in the property? Maybe you would like to access your system or energy management data via Modbus? Then the following applications could be right for connecting the respective interfaces.

  • The highlight: Use existing network cables

  • What all the following applications have in common is that you can use your existing cabling. Depending on which interfaces the respective devices are equipped with, different converters or extenders are required.

  • If the components to be connected both have a network interface and therefore a Modbus/TCP interface, the connection can be realized via Network Extender Set using any desired cable. Whether Ethernet, Single Pair Ethernet, bell wire or any shielded, two-core or multi-core cable: the extender set bridges distances of up to 1000m and even more if you connect another set in series.

Serial device server as TCP gateway

Infographic Modbus/TCP interface to Modbus/RTU interface
  • If the systems to be connected are equipped with different Modbus interfaces, a serial device server such as the W&T Com-Server is suitable for the connection. This converts the Modbus/TCP requests from the management system into Modbus/RTU requests that an inverter, for example, can understand. The existing Ethernet cabling in the property can also be used to connect the Com-Server to the management system.

  • If Modbus/RTU interfaces are available at both ends of the line, two Com-Servers can be switched to Box-2-Box mode. The two serial interfaces (RS485) are each connected to one of the two Com Servers, which in turn can be connected via the existing network cabling.
