Case history:

Remote maintenance in the refrigeration industry

A manufacturer of industrial refrigerators is confronted with the request of one of his customers to integrate the temperature control of the cooling aggregates that is currently realized by means of fee-charging dial-up connections, into the company’s own network.

The customer wished to reduce his telephone bill, as the call charges resulting from the at least hourly polling of the 20 to 30 locations were extremely high. For the conversion, any risky or expensive software and firmware adjustments should be avoided. Due to the fact that the connection could be established from either side, and the numerous types of communication partners set up at the terminal devices, simple point-to-point tunneling of the serial data was not an option.

The integration of W&T LAN modems ensured that the upgrading could be reduced to two main tasks to be carried out by the service technician.

  • Firstly, the existing dial-up modems were replaced by LAN modems.

  • Then, the numbers of the alarm centers preset in the configuration of the cooling devices were replaced by the respective IP addresses.
